Third generation jeweler Steven Freedman said that “one of the best things
about coming here is that you can get anything you want, diamonds, gold, antique
pieces, custom work. It’s all here and if I can’t do it for you, I’ll gladly
send you to someone who will. And you don’t have to go from mall to mall looking
for it. It’s all under one roof.”
Freedman diamond specialist Robert Van concurred. “Just the other day a
couple came in here and said …[another jeweler in the building] sent them here
because they didn’t have what we want, but Freedman’s definitely will.”
Obviously, this high-end approach to retailing has worked.
The building has been home to this one-stop shopping experience since being
built in 1922. According to Freedman, the condominium conversion in 1982 has
only served to improve the quality of service. “There are many more fine crafts
in this building now and we can get things done much more quickly. Nobody has to
go to New York anymore, New York comes to us.”
As do the customers. “We’re now selling to the grandchildren of our original
customers,” Freedman said. “People who buy jewelry know the importance of
trusting your jeweler. If I don’t have your trust, I’ll pass on the sale. And if
you’re not satisfied, I’ll give you your money back. The relationship is much
more important than one sale.”
If relationships, great values and a world-class selection aren’t enough to
get you in the door, go for the experience. Thousands of people flock there each
week.
